Some cultures have ceremonies, which often include rites of passage, to acknowledge the time when a person leaves childhood behind and enters the adult world. These ceremonies acknowledge the new adult and allow the families and carers to undertake the emotional journey involved in the changing of a young person’s status and position in a family. Unfortunately, these lovely opportunities have not been available in many modern cultures, and many families have not had the chance to reflect on the change of relationships and to acknowledge the contribution of carers in childhood.
